The very first Stater Bros. store opened in Yucaipa California. Yucaipa tutors are incredibly proud of Cleo, Leo and Lavoy Slater who founded Stater Bros. in 1936. The brothers bought the original market from W.A. David with a $600 down payment. As a measure of their success, in 2006 they were the first Inland Empire based company to enter the Fortune 500. What makes Stater Bros. unique from their grocery store counterparts is that it is a discount supermarket chain with on site butcher facilities, where customers can select different cuts of meat and have them freshly cut, weighed and bagged.

Stater Bros. has seen great success and has expanded year on year to the current 175 stores. The stores are all located in the Inland Empire, concentrated in the San Bernardino and Riverside counties, and in communities east of the San Gabriel River in Los Angeles and Orange counties. There are other stores too, in areas of San Diego County, and in Kern County. The headquarters were relocated from Yucaipa to San Bernardino as they needed a larger building. They are now located in a new 2,000,000 square foot facility at the west end of San Bernardino International Airport.

Yucaipa marketing tutors suggest Stater Bros. success could be related to their advertising slogans, which have evolved with the company over the years to relate to their customer base. Initially they did not have an official slogan, they did however have an unofficial phrase relating to their in house butcher service “It’s our meat that made us famous.” In the 90s to distinguish them from their competition their marketing slogan was “The Eco-Friendly Leader in the Heartland”, which adapted slightly to more user-friendly language, “The Low-Priced Leader in Your Hometown,” which was a little more personable. This became modified yet again by the unofficial slogan pulling on the companies all American heritage, distinguishing them from other supermarkets whose roots were not all American, and certainly not local to their community, it became “An American Tradition To Serve Your Family Well.” Their marketing went in a completely different direction in 2006 when they introduced a catchy rhyming phrase to try and stick in their customers’ minds. This lengthy slogan was printed onto their grocery bags, “Lowering Prices Everyday to Help You Save on What You Pay!” As of today their simplified slogan is “Where you Always Get more…. For Less”.
