About West Bloomfield
West Bloomfield Township, an idyllic region of Michigan outside of the hustle and bustle of Detroit, boasts many outdoor recreational activities, with nature appreciation abounding in its residents and visitors alike. With multiple lakes in the region, water sports are popular through the summer months, and ice fishing and skating on smaller bodies of water in the winter. For centuries, this fertile land housed Native American populations and European settlers who were more concerned about growing and catching food than enjoying lazy days in the water on a boat. Apple Island is a special geographical feature unique to the Greater West Bloomfield area. Spanning 37 acres, it is the one of the largest islands on an inland lake in Michigan—Orchard Lake. This region was named for the apple trees growing on the island and in the surrounding orchards near the shores of the lake.
Unlike some other varieties of fruit trees, apple trees require specific growing conditions, temperatures, and cultivation practices in order to flourish. The fertile soil and warm, humid spring and summers of West Bloomfield are ideal for apple trees. For years, apple orchards flourished every spring and summer, fruit blossoming for early fall harvests when the leaves turn. This was made possible by a number of environmental factors; apple trees need well-drained soil, nothing too wet, which needs to be moderately rich and retain moisture as well as air. Mulch with straw, hay, or some other organic material helps keep soil moist and provide nutrients as various elements decompose in order for apples to grow and mature.
In addition to particular temperatures and soil hydrogen concentrations, apple trees require a cooling period. This means cooler climates with cold winters help apple trees flourish. Referred to as “chill hours,” apples grown in the Northern United States—like the ones in West Bloomfield—are accompanied by bounteous amounts of fruit when harvest time rolls around year by year.
Apple Island was long inhabited by Native Americans in early Michigan, and settlers who came to the area for trade found apple tree after apple tree. With hard work and mutual trust, the Native American tribes and Europeans lived in relative harmony in this region of the state; no doubt, both groups of people appreciated the fruitful area, which certainly lead to its growth in population and popularity in Michigan. Today, Apple Island is an ecologically protected zone, open to tours and some archeological excavations, but perhaps its greatest lessons are learned from its past.
Like an apple tree, academic success requires particular conditions. In order to see the fruits of your labor, you need to cultivate good study skills, seek help when you need it, and commit to long-term investment in education. Grade Potential tutors in West Bloomfield help their students grow and stretch, like the apple trees that used to dot the landscape. They understand the necessity of cooling hours in addition to hours that require discipline in order to succeed—most importantly, they have the expertise to show what it takes to each of their clients.
