About Taylor
In the heart of Texas you will find the city of Taylor, a small town that has a big personality. With an award winning school district, families feel great about enrolling their children in Taylor schools. The high quality of life and beautiful scenery are both reasons why both residents and tourists love being in Taylor, Texas.
As many nearby cities got their start, Taylor was founded as a result of the railroad crossing through the area. A depot was constructed, and soon families began to settle in the area. Named after a railroad worker, Taylor has been in existence since the late 1870s, which means this area has a long history and has seen a lot of change and development. The original establishment was comprised of many eastern European immigrants from the Czech Republic and other nearby areas. German and Austrian immigrants also settled here. In its early days, Taylor was home to many successful farms and ranches.
Despite a destructive fire that ravaged the town in its early years, Taylor bounced back quickly. Back in the 1800s, fires were particularly destructive, and many similar towns turned into ghost towns after such events. Taylor was different –instead of moving away and giving up hope, the townspeople gathered together and constructed even better buildings and structures than were there before the fire.
Throughout the year, the Taylor Parks and Recreation Department provides a variety of community events for residents and visitors to enjoy. In April, residents participate in a city-wide clean up day, where volunteers work hard to clean up the city and improve areas that need fixing. A popular event in late spring, the Taylor Blackland Prairie Days is a heritage festival that celebrates all of the rich history in the area. With live music, local cuisine, and many activities geared towards young children, there is something fun for everyone to do at the Taylor Blackland Prairie Days.
Families take pride in the quality of education that the Taylor Independent School District provides. With excellent curriculum and an extensive list of programs and courses for students to choose from, Taylor Independent School District has won a number of awards for high performance scores. With an emphasis on learning with technology, a new high school in the city of Taylor provides a laptop to each student as a part of his or her educational experience. With other modern amenities and resources, this new high school has also experienced high performance scores and great student success.
