About Stanton
Most of us are familiar with Halloween, trick or treating from door to door in hopes of getting the best and most candy, or visiting the scariest haunted houses you can find. The town of Stanton California embraces this old tradition, and provides it residents with a fun event perfect for anyone.
The event is usually the Saturday before Halloween, that way everyone can still go out and enjoy their favorite Halloween traditions. The event is designed for kids and adults of all ages, and features games, a DJ, costume contests, and nonprofit food booths, along with the guarantee that you will have a great time! If you’ve recently spoken with your Stanton tutor, then you know Halloween is a holiday as old as time, but you might be wondering where it all started.
It is believed Halloween originated from an old Celtic festival called Samhain. This means that the origins of Halloween date back over 2000 years ago! The festival was created to mark the end of the summer and harvest season, and usher in the cold winters that so many Celts feared. Back then winters were a very real danger and something that the Celts feared. Because of the aura of death that surrounded this time, the Celts believed on October 31st the worlds of the living and the dead could blend together, allowing the spirits of the deceased to come to Earth and torment the living. However, this blurring of the line was also supposed to give Celtic priests the ability to see more clearly into the future, something that Celts relied on to get them through the harsh winters. The Celts would build large bonfires and dress up as animals, trying to tell each other’s’ fortunes. After the ceremony, everyone would re-light the fires in their hearths from the bonfire to bring good luck and warmth through the season.
When the Roman Empire conquered the Celts, they blended their two holidays, Feralia which commemorated the dead, and Pomona, a day for honoring the goddess Ponoma of the trees and fruit with the Celtic Samhain. The symbol of Ponoma was an apple, and is possibly why apples are a staple of Halloween, especially in such games as bobbing for apples.
When All Martyrs day was established by the Christian church to be celebrated on November 1st, The Celts who were heavily under the influence of the church, blended it with their holiday. While Halloween went under a few different names such as All Souls Day and All-Hallows, it is from this tradition that the Halloween we know today arose. So, if you have finished up with your last lesson from your Stanton tutor, why not go out and enjoy this two thousand year old day of fun!
