About South Lake Tahoe
South Lake Tahoe in El Dorado County, California, is a small town located on the shores of Lake Tahoe, famous for beautiful beaches, water sports, and hiking in the summer and skiing for the winter. Each year, thousands flock to South Lake Tahoe for vacation, enjoying the scenery and rugged landscapes offered by the lake. Accessible by small, winding highways and located high in the Sierra Nevadas, South Lake Tahoe is few in population and thrives on tourism. All of this was threatened in the summer of 2007 with the Angora fire.
In late June, the strong winds that blow off the ridges of the mountains picked up an illegally-made campfire just outside of South Lake Tahoe. Unusually dry conditions fueled the fire, which spread rapidly and resulted in evacuations all over South Lake Tahoe and the surrounding towns. For over a week, the wind pushed the fire across 3100 acres, destroying 242 homes and damaging dozens of other structures.
Firefighters were able to contain the blaze two days before the Fourth of July, and for many in California, wildfires a way of life. Stories such as the Angora fire are all-too common, but public servants responded quickly and efficiently. No loss of life occurred, thanks largely to the efforts of local firefighters. South Lake Tahoe’s local economy was able to recover, and state infrastructure funds helped local businesses stay open—even those damaged by the fire.
The story of the Angora Fire shows how one innocuous mistake can have devastating consequences. More often than not, when students’ grades suffer, it’s a problem that compounds upon itself. One missing assignment here, one low test score there can quickly add up and negatively impact over all grades. Students in South Lake Tahoe, and the tutors who work with them, are combatting similar problems in academic performance. Students are much better off when they quickly arrange appointments with tutors so their grades don’t turn into the equivalent of a wildfire. It’s better to contain and control the problems from the start than let them spiral out of control.
Tutors in South Lake Tahoe are well trained and equipped to handle any problem thrown at them in a session, just as the public service workers responded during the Angora Fire. Tutors respond quickly and professionally to offer their services before students are beyond the point of passing a class. Students have everything to gain and nothing to lose when they put their trust in the tutors of South Lake Tahoe, just as the residents of this region did when they saw local firefighters step in put out the Angora Fire ten years ago.
