About South El Monte
About thirteen miles from the downtown skyscrapers, South El Monte, California is primarily a residential suburb of Los Angeles in the southern section of the San Gabriel Valley. Originally part of a Mexican land grant, the area which is now South El Monte was settled by members of the Workman-Rowland party who established large ranchos raising various crops and cattle. El Monte seems to have gotten its name from an old translation of the term, meaning “wood” rather than “mountain.” Indeed, when the first Spanish explorers entered this part of the San Gabriel Valley, they discovered a land covered with thick wooded patches of willows, wild grapevines and alders. The new Anglo-American owners of the land discovered it was perfect for raising oranges and lemons. In 1873 the Southern Pacific Railroad opened a depot in nearby El Monte further increasing the profitability of citrus. The land owners relied on the labor of Mexican and Chinese workers which would ultimately lead to labor strikes in the 1930’s and the unionization of California farmworkers. Today, South El Monte has a diverse population with a mixture of Latino, White and Asian-American residents.

The museum boasts over 12,000 objects including paintings by Rembrandt, Renoir, Raphael and Picasso as well as sculptures by Rodin and Henry Moore.
It’s also a short drive east to Pomona where Los Angelenos gather each year for the Los Angeles County Fair. Ever since 1922 Pomona has been the home of the fair at the 543-acre fairgrounds known as Fairplex. Held for three weeks in the fall, the fair is one of the largest in the nation with average yearly attendance topping one million visitors. The fair features livestock competitions, concerts, a traditional carnival and the California Heritage Square historical exhibit. For many years, the fair also hosted horse racing but closed the racing facility in 2014.
