About Smyrna
Smyrna, Georgia has become known for its fast growth. Located in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell metropolitan area, Smyrna is one of Georgia's most rapidly growing cities.
Top employers in Smyrna include IBM, the Emory-Adventist Hospital at Smyrna, and UCB (Union Chimique Belge), a multinational biopharmaceutical firm. Those working and living in Smyrna don't lack for places to shop, with stores ranging from a Wild Birds to Outlet Shoppes to USA Fireworks located in the city.
And there's no lack of options when it comes to having fun as well. Smyrna Parks and Recreation offers an extensive variety of events and activities for families, seniors, children and adults. There are art camps for youngsters, an Adult Co-Ed Indoor Volleyball League, softball and basketball leagues catering to both men and women, and all levels of gymnastics for children.
The City of Smyrna also prides itself in holding special events. For example, in late April, the Spring Jonquil Festival takes place on the lovely Village Green in the downtown area. With more than 175 arts & crafts booths, 15 food booths, activities for the kids, and an entertainment stage, the festival offers a way for families to enjoy the beautiful weather and celebrate spring with the community.
Sometimes simple pleasures are the best. That's the message in early July, when Family Fun Day features "Bubble Mania." Taking place on the lawn outside Smyrna Library, families are encouraged to wear bathing suits and sandals along with sunscreen. The bubble blowing event offers a way for all ages to have old-fashioned fun.
When it comes to its claim for fame, well-known individuals from Smyrna range from U.S. Representative Bob Barr to actress Julia Roberts. Baseball star Ron Gant, pastor Louie Giglio and football player Tay Glover-Wright also have helped make Smyrna famous.
Named People magazine's 2017 World’s Most Beautiful Woman, Julia Roberts has confessed that she was "awkward" during her high school years. Julia credited another famous individual, NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough, as one of the most fabulous people from her days in Smyrna.
After Kimbrough and Julia Roberts were classmates in Smyrna, she went on to become famed in "Pretty Woman" while he earned a Presidential Scholarship to the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace engineering, Julia's former classmate soared as lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, serving as a pilot of Apache helicopters in the Gulf War.
Kimbrough subsequently received a Master of Science degree in operations research from the Georgia Institute of Technology and later was selected as an astronaut by NASA. He and Julia Roberts stayed in touch, and Kimbrough even Skyped with Julia from outer space.
