About Shoreline
Shoreline, Washington is a small but friendly community in King County, and home to the Historical Shoreline Museum, a small but important building that works to preserve the history of the community. A great place to go over history lessons with your Shoreline tutor!
The museum started as a Bicentennial Project for Shoreline back in 1975, when the US government charged every community across the nation with creating a commemorative project that would serve as a reminder of the nation’s history.
The Shoreline School District embarked on this adventure with the help of the Shoreline Historical Society, along with many teachers and members of the community who wanted to be involved. The Museum started in a historic building, the 1912 Ronald School that had actually been scheduled for demolition. Already the organization was off to a good start preserving the history of its community. The building was remodeled to reflect its old glory, along with a few additions such as bathrooms and an elevator to make it accessible to all.
The museum ran happily for 35 years, when it was bought back by the school district for re-purposing the high school. Now I’m sure the building is used as classrooms and places for students to meet with their Shoreline tutors. The museum moved just 10 blocks away to its new location, where it is still growing and expanding, with new plans always being drawn up for the future of the museum.
If you were to visit the museum you would find exhibits like the “High and Dry: The 100th Anniversary of the Lowering of Lake Washington: exhibit. This exhibit commemorates the building of a ship canal between Lake Union and Lake Washington back in 1916, which caused the water in Lake Washington to cascade over in to Lake Union, leaving the Black River, Lake Washington’s main drainage, dry and barren.
There are also ongoing exhibits, such as “Linking the Community Through Time: Connections That Brought Us Together” which focuses on the history of the community and how they got where they are today. You can take a peek at photos and artifacts in their virtual gallery that document the progression of history in all parts of King County.
Along with its exhibits Shoreline Historical Museum also puts on different events for the community, from Hands on Day to Celebrate Shoreline Cruise-In Car Show. All of these events and exhibits are meant to bring the people together, and remember their history as well as celebrate present days.
