    About Scripps Ranch

Along Interstate 15 just a few miles from the beach, Scripps Ranch is an upscale neighborhood in the northern part of San Diego. Born in Illinois in 1854 Edward W. Scripps came from a family of publishers. His English grandfather published the London Literary Gazette and, in 1873, his half-brother James opened the Detroit News where Scripps began working at the age of 18. In 1877 he founded the Penny Press, later the Cleveland Press, which would ultimately have the largest circulation in the city. At one point Scripps owned over 25 newspapers and in 1894 he teamed with Milton McRae forming the Scripps-McRae League of Newspapers. Scripps and McRae also founded the United Press International (UPI) at about this time. HIs newspapers often championed progressive causes and trade unions at the turn of the century, endorsing Wisconsin Senator Robert M. LaFollette for president in 1924. In 1890, during a visit to California to visit an ailing sister, he fell in love with the warm, arid climate just north of the city of San Diego. Scripps had suffered from terrible colds his entire life and he found Southern California to be just what the doctor ordered. He promptly built a North African style winter home called Miramar (sea view) which, by 1900, had become his year-round residence. Scripps went on to create an enduring business enterprise and today, the Scripps Company, including newspapers and other media outlets, sees revenues over $1 billion a year. In 1903, Scripps and his sister Ellen Browning Scripps provided funding for a marine biological research laboratory in San Diego. The Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla is one of the oldest and most important ocean research centers in the world. Scripps, of course, also lent his name to the ranch where he built his home. Today, Scripps Ranch is quite affluent with a median household income exceeding $140,000 a year.

It’s certain that a Scripps Ranch tutor will keep you ahead of the academic curve so you can take time away from the books to enjoy Scripps Ranch and the greater San Diego area. For outdoor enthusiasts, Lake Miramar Reservoir is an excellent destination for fishermen and the lake allows different water craft including boats, canoes and float tubes. The lake has a five-mile loop trail which is open to both hikers and mountain bikers. Picnic tables, barbecues and boat rentals are also available.

Mission Trails Regional Park on the south edge of Scripps Ranch covers over 7,000 acres of natural and developed area with about 60-miles of trails. The Mission Gorge region of the park features easy to moderate hikes with the Junipero Serra Trail covering 1.8-miles with a slight elevation gain of 47 feet. In contrast, the Cowles Mountain region has more challenging hikes to the Cowles Mountain summit climbing over 900 feet in less than three miles. Hikers will be rewarded by views of the ocean and the rest of San Diego County.

Scripps Ranch benefits from being close to the Pacific Ocean. It’s only a few miles west to the La Jolla Shore and a tour of the La Jolla Sea Caves. The tour blends the excitement of kayaking with views of the beautiful environment. The 1.5-hour tour features different marine settings including sandy beaches, rocky caves, steep cliffs and deep water canyons. Alert kayakers may catch sight of wildlife such as sea lions, pelicans, giant rays and colorful garibaldi who seek shelter in the rocky shallows just below the ocean surface.
