    About Savage

The area now known as Savage Minnesota was originally called Hamilton after a city in Ontario Canada. The town was renamed for Marion Willis Savage in 1904 but the real star in Savage Minnesota was the racehorse that Mr Savage owned. His name was Dan Patch. Dan Patch started out as an unlikely racehorse. A Standardbred American Pacer his hocks were a little misshapen causing him to strike his own hooves when he ran, or strike the carriage he pulled for harness racing. Marion Willis Savage trained Dan Patch on his farm just outside the city limits. It wasn't long before Dan Patch began to break speed records; 14 of them in the early 1900s alone. In 1905, he set a world's record for the fastest mile by a harness horse: 1 minute 55 seconds. That record went unbroken for 30 years. Dan Patch was so fast that eventually other race horse owners refused to compete against him because they knew they would lose. Dan Patch's fame grew and the prestige of his home town grew too. Today Savage Minnesota celebrates their native animal son with Dan Patch Days; a 3 day event in honor of the horses record mile time of 1 minute, 55 seconds. Residents gather every year at Community Park to enjoy live entertainment, fair food, a parade, a 5K fun run, fireworks and more. A tutor from the city of Savage can help you get ahead of the curve and get back to all the fun things this city has to offer.

During World War II Savage was home also to Camp Savage; a Military Intelligence School (MIS) language program. The purpose of the school at Camp Savage was to improve the foreign language skills of Japanese-American soldiers, and to train them in military intelligence. Soldiers who were Nisei (children of Japanese immigrants) had become more Americanized than the military initially thought. Only 7 percent were fluent or proficient in Japanese. The school was originally established at the Presidio in San Francisco. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, however, the military relocated the language program inland in the interest of national security. Those who completed language training were stationed throughout the Pacific Theater and Alaska. They were vital to the American war effort; translating captured documents, monitoring Japanese radio broadcasts, questioning captured Japanese soldiers, and translating for Japanese-speaking civilians.

Savage Minnesota features plenty of outdoor activities no matter the weather. Physical activity is a great way to prepare for a study session with your city of Savage tutor. Along with Dan Patch Days in the summer Savage Parks and Recreation also hosts snowshoeing, ice skating a campfire, s'mores, hot chocolate and treats at the McColl Pond Environmental Learning and Event Center. This free family fun event takes place every other Sunday during the winter months. Savage Sports Park features a temporary dome so you can stay active even in cold weather . Many parks feature walking trails. Some have warming huts, pleasure skating rinks and ice hockey rinks. At least 2 of the parks are connected by pedestrian trail through local neighborhoods.
