About Santa Fe Springs
Santa Fe Springs is known as a relatively new start-up community just outside of Los Angeles, California. But few people know that Santa Fe Springs is the birthplace of a revolutionary car design and construction, which has endured and influenced countless iterations of vehicles ever since the 1960s. What is this design, readers may ask? The Shelby Cobra—sometimes referred to as the AC Cobra—was first formulated by Carroll Hall Shelby in 1962.
Shelby was known in the United States for his racecar driving, imparting his skills with various driving clubs and for various companies in the 1950s. Shelby retired early, in 1959, from racecar driving, and went on to work in the auto industry until his death in 2012. In Santa Fe Springs, he opened a shop and a high performance driving school.
Shelby obtained a license to import AC Cobras from England—but only their frames and wheels, with no engines or power trains. The AC Cobra was lightweight and sporty, but needed American muscle to make it an exciting vehicle to hit the American market. Shelby worked with Ford to build a V8 engine to place inside the Cobra, and thus the Shelby Cobra was born. It had all the features of a lightweight, sporty car and all the power of a muscle car thanks to Ford’s large engine.
Shelby remained influential with Ford manufactured cars, including the Daytona Coupe, GT40, the Mustang-based Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT500. After parting with Ford, Shelby moved on to help develop performance cars with divisions of the two other Big 3 American companies: Dodge, and Oldsmobile. His innovative vision was appreciated by many, and thanks to his designs and craftsmanship, he helped these large American manufacturers churn out car after car, which in turn contributed to the United States’ population boom and suburban expansion—especially in California.
Shelby’s Cobra represents a unique moment for American car culture, and has certainly lasted several decades’ worth of praise and design. The Cobra is an example of what happens when two good ideas come together to form a great idea. The sporty body and muscle car engine and power train combine to become a single desirable product; similarly, when two good minds come together in a tutoring situation, great things happen. Tutors in Santa Fe Springs bring skill and creativity to the table, showing their clients how to think critically and effectively about their academic success.
