    About Sandy Springs

Set up to distribute land equitably, the Georgia Land Lotteries of 1820 brought thousands of new settlers to the state. Among them were John Austin and his wife Elizabeth Copeland who built a house on Johnson Ferry Road, a busy thoroughfare from Marietta to Decatur in what is now Sandy Springs, Georgia, just a few miles north of Atlanta. The Austin-Johnson House is the oldest existing structure in the area. Although the house was built in the 1840’s the history of Sandy Springs goes back much further. The Native American Creek Nation inhabited the area south of the Chattahoochee River as early as 1500 while the Cherokee lived north of the river which is now the northern border of Sandy Springs. In 1853, the town became part of newly formed Fulton County. During the Civil War, Union troops crossed the river on their way south to capture Atlanta.

In the first half of the twentieth century Sandy Springs lured many wealthy citizens from Atlanta to open businesses and build second homes. After World War II the city experienced a rapid increase in residential development, especially after the building of the interstate highway system in the 1950’s. Growth continues today. A Sandy Springs tutor will probably tell you that the city is considered one of the best suburbs in the Atlanta Metropolitan area. The real estate website Movoto.com has ranked Sandy Springs in the top ten of Atlanta suburbs with a median home price well over $400,000.

While only a few minutes outside the Atlanta metropolitan area, Sandy Springs is surrounded by 950 acres of parks and natural areas. A Grade Potential tutor can help you get ahead of the curve, so you can get back to enjoying the outdoor activities around Sandy Springs. Established by Georgia native and 39th President of the United States Jimmy Carter, the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is a 48-mile stretch of river between Atlanta and Lake Lanier, 22 of which run along Sandy Springs’ northern edge. The river offers hiking, boating, camping, fishing and several other activities. Fishing on the Chattahoochee is year-round with an abundance of bass, trout and catfish.

Sandy Springs boasts 16 parks giving residents and visitors alike a wealth of activities to choose from. Morgan Falls Overlook Park is on the shores of the Chattahoochee and offers fun for all, including kayaking, paddle boarding or just a simple day around the picnic table. Created to inspire imagination and creativity, Abernathy Greenway Linear Park is a playable art park which was voted “Best of Atlanta” in 2014. The John Ripley Forbes Big Trees Forest Preserve is an oasis in the metropolitan area with 30 acres of trees, plants and wildlife. The preserve also features nearly a mile of footpaths in the heart of a naturally scenic wilderness.
