Long before Spanish explorers and missionaries arrived here in the 1800s, this land where modern San Rafael exists today was inhabited by several different tribes of Coast Miwok Native American people. Once the Spanish missionaries arrived and set up the California network of missions throughout the area, the Miwok people were largely forced to move elsewhere. Mission San Rafael Arcangel was started here locally in San Rafael, and today you can find it near the downtown area of modern day San Rafael. It isn't the original, however, as the old Mission San Rafael Arcangel was left in a state of decay after it was abandoned back in the late 1800s. In the mid 1900s a replica was built in its place, and that is the mission that you will find there today.

San Rafael has been in several big films, including American Graffiti, directed by local Bay Area native George Lucas. Movie buffs will be familiar with some of the iconic scenes from American Graffiti that depict The Rafael Theatre. This old school movie theatre is a charming asset to the downtown area of San Rafael, taking visitors back a few decades.

Families love all of the beautiful parks here in San Rafael. There are so many beautiful outdoor spaces to explore here in the Bay Area, and San Rafael is home to its fair share of gorgeous parks and recreational facilities. China Camp State Park is the only local state park here in San Rafael. Several local community parks are well maintained and feature playgrounds, picnic benches, and nature trails. The Terra Linda Recreational Center is a popular place in San Rafael and serves the community with fun programs, classes, and sports leagues for all ages.

When it comes to education, there are plenty of options in San Rafael. The primary public school district is the San Rafael City School District, with public elementary schools, public middle schools, and public high schools. Several local private schools and charter schools are also available to local students in San Rafael. For any students that need extra help, local San Rafael tutors are available.
