About San Luis Obispo
What was once a hidden gem in the heart of the Central Coast of California, San Luis Obispo made a name for itself in the early 2000s when Oprah Winfrey named it the “happiest city in the world”. Since then, life in this small coastal city has never been the same, but in many ways, continues to improve and expand as it provides a high quality of life to its happy, healthy residents.
The high cost of living isn’t enough to keep people away from living in San Luis Obispo. The young, vibrant culture draws in people from all walks of life, some who choose to live here and scrape by any way they can. San Luis Obispo has access to many local parks, trails, mountains, and of course, beaches. Avila Beach is a ten minute drive south, Pismo Beach only fifteen, and of course, a quick drip on Highway One will take you to Morro Bay, another tourist destination of its own right.
To simply call San Luis Obispo a “college town” wouldn’t do it justice. Sure, San Luis Obispo is very college friendly, but that doesn’t define the city. “SLO”, as locals call it, is home to the prestigious California Polytechnic State University, which was named the number one public masters college in the country in 2017. Cuesta College is a local junior college, which provides a lot of great educational opportunities, but at a community college price. Locals are very friendly to college students, and the downtown area has a very “young” and “hipster” vibe, drawing young people from all walks of life, whether that be those on the college track, or otherwise. Many businesses and companies set up shop here in San Luis Obispo, feeding off of new graduates who are hungrily looking for a job and a reason to stay here after college.
San Luis Obispo’s Farmers’ Market is just one small example of the local culture. Every Thursday throughout the year, local farmers, vendors, restaurants, and artists set up booths along Higuera Street, which is bursting at the seem with locals who come here each week. College students come down to grab some local food and socialize with friends, while families come to buy groceries for the week while their youngsters play in the bounce house, or perform with their local dance studio. With a family-friendly environment, there’s something for everyone at the Farmers’ Market in SLO, and thanks to the nearly perfect year-round weather, it is rarely canceled due to rain.
When it comes to local education, San Luis Obispo is known for having many high quality options for local students. From public schools to private and charter schools, San Luis Obispo also provides many high quality educational resources, due in part to the local college facilities of Cal Poly and Cuesta. Students of any age that seek out extra help can contact local San Luis Obispo tutors. These local tutors are ready and willing to help out in a wide range of subjects, all with the goal of helping each student reach his or her full potential.
