About Rowland Heights
A little more than twenty miles east on California Highway 60 from the downtown, Rowland Heights, California is a suburb of Los Angeles named after early California pioneer John A. Rowland. Born in 1791, Rowland first migrated west along the Santa Fe Trail to Taos, New Mexico in the 1820’s where he took a Mexican wife, María Encarnación Martínez who, over the years, gave him ten children. For a while he was a fur trapper in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains above Taos. It was about this time he partnered with William Workman to manufacture whiskey. It was with Workman that Rowland, at the age of 50, came to California on the Old Spanish Trail in 1841. He promptly petitioned the Mexican governor for a land grant and received nearly 50,000 acres known as Rancho La Puente which he eventually split with Workman. Several current Los Angeles County cities including Rowland Heights, Covina and San Dimas make up what was once Rancho La Puente. Rowland built the first grist mill in the Los Angeles area and turned his attention to establishing a successful working ranch with cattle, wheat, fruit trees and vineyards. After the death of María, Rowland remarried Charlotte Gray, a widow with three children. They also had a daughter, Mary Agnes, who went on to marry General Charles Forman, the founder of Toluca Lake. Two of Rowland’s sons married the daughters of Bernardo Yorba, the founder of Yorba Linda in Orange County. Rowland lived to the ripe old age of 82 and is buried, along with Workman, at El Campo Santo Cemetery on the grounds of the Wokman and Temple Family Homestead which is now a museum in City of Industry. Today, Rowland Heights has a diverse population with a large Asian presence. In fact, Rowland Heights is nearly sixty percent Asian.
It’s highly likely that a Rowland Heights tutor will keep you caught up on your studies so you can get out and enjoy the exciting things to do in Rowland Heights and the rest of the greater Los Angeles region. For those interested in knowing more about California history, the Workman and Temple Family Homestead Museum takes visitors back to the 19th century Rancho period. The Workman adobe, built in 1842, has been renovated over the years so that today it is an authentic replica of the original house reflecting those early days before Los Angeles County came under urban development. The museum opened in 1981 with guided tours of the adobe and the adjoining cemetery.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Peter F. Schabarum Regional Park on the western edge of Rowland Heights offers a 575-acre green space with hiking trails, picnic tables, tennis courts and playgrounds. The hiking, biking and equestrian trails connect with the Juan Bautista De Anza Historic Trail. The park also includes a covered amphitheater and facilities for overnight camping. Nearby Powder Canyon features a 6.1-mile loop trail with scenic vistas and colorful wildflowers blooming in spring.
