About Roseville
Some people say that Minnesota’s favorite sport is shopping. If that’s true, then the City of Roseville is well equipped to play. Just ten minutes north of both Minneapolis and St. Paul, Roseville has two easily accessible malls close to major freeways—the Har Mar Mall and the Rosedale Center—as well as several smaller malls.
Rosedale Center
Twelve million people a year shop at Rosedale, thanks to its reputation as a powerhouse in shopping. The mall is currently undergoing a two-year renovation to add “top-to-bottom upgrades” and a parking deck, according to the mall’s website. The upscale department store Von Maur will join current anchors Herberger’s, Macy’s, and JCPenney and over 150 other retailers. There is also a fourteen-screen AMC Theater with an IMAX theater and state-of-the-art sound.
HarMar Mall
The second enclosed shopping mall in Roseville, the Har Mar Mall, is smaller than its Rosedale Center counterpart but nonetheless offers great shopping. The mall currently has forty-five tenants, including Burlington Coat Factory, HomeGoods, Staples, Marshall’s, and Barnes & Noble. Local indie rock musician Sean Tillmann based his stage name, Har Mar Superstar, on the mall, where he spent many hours hanging out and watching movies. Tillmann is also leader of the musical group Sean Na Na.
Target’s Beginnings
Shopping had its start long ago in Roseville. It is home to the first-ever Target store, which opened in 1962 as “a store you can be proud to shop in, a store you can have confidence in, a store that is fun to shop and exciting to visit,” according to company archives. The store was replaced by a SuperTarget in 2005, offering one-stop shopping for household goods, clothing, and groceries. The chain, with over 1,800 stores, 341,000 employees, and headquarters in Minneapolis, focuses on “cheap chic” to appeal to young, image-conscious shoppers.
Other Claims to Fame
Roseville is also the location of the first Barnes & Noble Bookstore built outside of New York City, as well as the first McDonald’s and the first Dairy Queen in Minnesota. The Dairy Queen, incidentally, was listed on the “10 Most Endangered Historic Places” list curated by the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota when the current owner began talking about demolishing it.
Minnesota, in general, is a great place to shop, with no sales tax on clothing or shoes.
Surprisingly, Roseville boasts higher per-capita spending than nearby Bloomington, home of the Mall of America. Additionally, Roseville has the greatest number of restaurants in the area per capita, so the town is well versed in welcoming its visitors with services and amenities they want. One of those services, tutoring in Roseville, gives kids the leg up they need to do well in school. In fact, Roseville tutors allow their student clients to have more free time for the statewide hobby of shopping!
