    About Rosemead

Just ten miles east from the downtown skyscrapers on Interstate 10, Rosemead, California is a suburb of Los Angeles. Originally part of land administered by San Gabriel Mission, Americans began settling the area, then known as Savannah, in the 1850’s after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ceded California to the United States. Settlers found rich, fertile soil and immediately began planting fruits, vegetables, grain and feed. Traveling across the continent from Arkansas by ox driven wagons, John and Harriet Guess were among the first to make Rosemead their home, establishing a 175-acre ranch where they farmed and raised cattle. Guess also owned cattle ranches in Riverside County, Chino and Tehachapi but his home was in Rosemead. In 1903 he became a major stockholder in the First National Bank in nearby El Monte. Guess’s wife Harriet bore eight children, six of them with John. Their eldest son Henry is considered the first Anglo-American born in Los Angeles County. Harriet lived out her life in Rosemead while John traveled all over California tending to his cattle. She died at the age of 72 in 1897 while John lived on until 1919 when he died at the age of 91. Both are buried in the Savannah Memorial Park Cemetery near where they first camped in 1855. For many years Rosemead remained a small farming community but as Los Angeles County’s population increased it became more urban. In recent times an influx of Asian-Americans have come to Rosemead bringing ethnic restaurants and businesses. Today, Rosemead is over sixty percent Asian.

Its’s a certainty that a Rosemead tutor will keep you ahead of the academic curve so you can take time away from your books to enjoy Rosemead and the excitement of the larger urban area. The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens in nearby San Marino features rare books, famous paintings and more than a dozen spectacular gardens over 120 acres. Famous European paintings by the likes of Thomas Gainsborough, Joshua Reynolds and J.M.W. Turner grace the walls of the Huntington as well as American masterpieces by Mary Cassatt and Edward Hopper. Gardens include the Chinese “Garden of Flowing Fragrance,” the “Desert Garden” and the “Rose Garden.” The Huntington’s famous library holds over 420,000 rare books with collections dating from Medieval times through the 21st century.

One of Los Angeles County’s largest and most popular outdoor recreation areas is a short drive from Rosemead in South El Monte. Whittier Narrows is a 1,492-acre park offering three lakes with boating and fishing, BMX racing, hiking and equestrian trails, picnic areas and a disc golf course. The Narrows is also home to the American Military Museum with its collection of over 170 vehicles from both world wars, the Korean War, Vietnam War, the Cold War and Operation Desert Storm.

It’s worth a short drive north from Rosemead to visit the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden, a 127-acre oasis in nearby Arcadia which features a variety of plant habitats. The gardens are organized geographically and chronologically around Baldwin Lake, named after California pioneering businessman E.J. “Lucky” Baldwin. Gardens include South America, Australia, Africa and the Prehistoric Forest. The arboretum offers a variety of events throughout the year including concerts and tours.
