About Riverhead
In the early twentieth century, Riverhead tutors tell us that there was a big influx of Polish immigrants into the area. To this day an area or section of the town is known fondly as Polish Town and every year an annual event is held called the Polish Town Fair which celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Polish people who chose Riverhead as their home. August 2017 saw the 43rd annual Polish Town Fair. The Polish Town Fair is organized by the Polish Town Civic Association. The Fair includes many activities and attractions designed to entertain and delight the many visitors that attend the fair annually. The fair takes place over two days and runs all weekend long between 10am and 6pm both Saturday and Sunday. At the fair visitors in attendance can expect to see many different booths to examine and inspect including those that sell locally hand made craft items, and some that sell delicious traditional Polish fare including:
Varenyky – Also known as Pierogi, these are delicious savory (or sweet) dumplings filled with sauerkraut, ground meat and or cheese, potato, and sometimes fruits.
Bigos – Is a traditional dish, which is a type of hot stew, consisting of chopped stewed meat (a variety of meats are used interchangeably) with sauerkraut and shredded cabbage.
Borscht – There are many variations of this soup, but the most traditional is the bright red beetroot based version. It is served both hot and cold.
Paczki - Very popular Polish dessert, this is closest in western culture to doughnuts. They are traditionally eaten in spring as a splurge food to fill up before the fasting before Easter begins.
Czernina – Less widely available or prepared in the United States this soup consists of ducks blood and chicken broth. Sometimes other animal blood is used in place of the duck’s blood, like pig’s blood or even hen or rabbit.
Babka – also known as Kulich, Is a popular dessert that is very sweet. It’s a type of yeast cake frequently made with chocolate.
Kaskanka - Is a savory blood sausage made from pig’s blood and pork offal.
Kapusta - Is a type of side dish but sometimes served as a main meal consisting of stewed sauerkraut flavored with garlic, mushrooms and onions. And if you’re lucky also bacon is added.
Golabki – This is a savory cabbage roll, where boiled cabbage is wrapped around minced meat usually beef or pork and mixed with rice or barley.
Cucumber Soup – His delicious soup is usually a combination of cucumber and potato in a soup although sometimes rice is used as a substitute for the potatoes.
