You might be wondering how Ridgewood got its name, as it doesn’t sound very Dutch, and that is because a large group of English immigrants came to this area in the early nineteenth century and gave it its name. Later in the nineteenth century, Ridgewood saw more immigration from other European and eastern European countries, including Germany, Romania, and Italy. It wasn’t until decades later that more immigrants from even more diverse countries arrived to this area of New York City, including immigrants from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Ecuador. This is part of what gives Ridgewood such a vibrant flavor; there are many diverse cultures that call Ridgewood home.
The typical neighborhoods throughout Ridgewood are fairly densely populated, with many very tall apartment buildings, which consist primarily of single-family homes and townhouses.
