    About Punta Gorda

Punta Gorda, one of Florida’s many coastal towns, lives up to the name bequeathed it. Translated to English, Punta Gorda means “Fat Point,” which indicates a wide, expansive area ripe for growth and livelihood. Punta Gorda also embodies the tropical climate so many associate with Florida, with warm Gulf weather and flora regular features of life in this small community. It’s no wonder that early Spanish explorers—such as Ponce de Leon—were so taken with the richness of the Florida peninsula. As a consequence, Punta Gorda and other towns like it pay homage to their early settlers. The Ponce de Leon City Park, located in Punta Gorda proper, is an embodiment of one of those homages.

Juan Ponce de Leon, a Spanish explorer at the same time Magellan and Columbus were eagerly crossing the Atlantic, headed south toward Florida for the first time in 1513. Though popular legend posits that he was in search of the mythological fountain of youth—supposedly found deep in the Bahamian tropics of the peninsula—there isn’t exactly historical evidence that this motivated Ponce de Leon in his conquests. With or without a fountain of youth, the western coasts of Florida lured men like Ponce de Leon with their natural resources, fertile soil, and warm climate. This region was a key stop for Ponce de Leon and other explorers who were interested in pushing further into the Caribbean to colonize the islands in the Gulf of Mexico.

Punta Gorda’s park, named for this famous explorer, preserves much of the natural beauty that Ponce de Leon and his men certainly would have noted from their early expeditions along the panhandle. Protected wetlands make up many of the 10 acres that encompasses the park, as well as boating and fishing opportunities. The Peace River Wildlife Center, a wildlife refuge site, also operates in Ponce de Leon Park; this is quite a contrast to the original aims of Ponce de Leon, who famously hunted tortoises, abalone, tropical fish, and other sea life upon his arrival to Florida. The wildlife center seeks to rescue and preserve native wildlife of the region, with birds and small mammals being the primary recipients of the center’s care and attention. Ponce de Leon Park is a place where residents and visitors alike can not only enjoy the outdoors, but also consider the important role that discovery played in the history of the sunshine state.

Tutors in Punta Gorda also are explorers in their own right—without the notion of conquest, of course. Instead, they help their clients discover success when they falter and grades suffer. With expertise and enthusiasm, tutors guide students through the academic rehabilitation process in each session, much like the Peace River Wildlife volunteers who help procure the livelihood of their charges year after year. So, the next time you wander through Ponce de Leon Park, or lay on one of its beaches, remember that discovery played an integral role in its foundation, just as it plays an integral role in academic success.
