About Poway
A relatively young city, Poway is a small city in Southern California that remained unincorporated until the 1980s. Located within San Diego County, Poway is a beautiful community that is nestled into the hills near San Diego. Due to its close proximity to San Diego, many residents live here in Poway and commute to San Diego for work, making it a popular commuter city.
Long before the Spanish explorers and missionaries arrived to this region of Southern California, the land that is now Poway was once occupied by native Diegueno peoples. Many ancient artifacts have been found throughout the valley and hills surrounding Poway, including arrowheads, old stones, and pieces of pottery from long ago. This rich history is also shown through pictographs that have been found on local boulders and rock formations.
The valley that is now Poway was once cattle grazing land for the Spanish settlers that took over this area in the late 1700s. The area remained as farmland and ranch land for over a hundred years. It wasn’t until the late 1800s that American settlers began coming into this area, and more farms began appearing, as the soil was very fertile. A local creek provided water to the crops, and rich agriculture came from this area.
With so many beautiful outdoor spaces, Poway boasts beautiful parks and well-maintained recreational facilities throughout the city. Lake Poway is a popular spot for water-related activities like fishing, swimming, and boating, while the Blue Sky Ecological Reserve is a great place to see the local natural habitat in motion. Many hiking trails are open throughout the hills surrounding Poway, and some of the more popular trails include the Sycamore Canyon Preserve and Goodan Ranch trails, and the City of Poway Trails network. These extensive trails are well trafficked by trail runners, bikers, and hikers alike.
When Poway was still just a small farming town in the late 1800s, a one-room schoolhouse served all of the town’s people. In present day, Poway is served by a thriving school district, the Poway Unified School District, which includes over two dozen elementary schools, several middle schools, and several high schools, too. A number of private schools and charter schools are also available to Poway residents, providing many options for education. For students that need extra help, local Poway tutors are available. These tutors provide expertise in a wide range of subjects, giving one-on-one lessons, and helping each student reach their individual educational goals.
