    About Portsmouth

Portsmouth, Virginia is the proud home of the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. The Naval Medical Center Portsmouth is the oldest continuously operating hospital in the Navy medical system. The hospital has been continuously treating patients since 1830, and prides itself in serving America's veterans and their families. Today, the medical center is nationally acclaimed and provides state of the art facilities and treatments.

The original Portsmouth Naval Hospital building was constructed in 1827, and it is still in use today. In fact, the original three story (plus a basement) granite and freestone building has only had a few modifications over the years, and has truly stood the test of time. The first major changes were not even made until 1907, ninety years after the original build. At that time, the interior of the building was reconstructed, and a dome was added to the roof. The building would be expanded in 1960, and then again in 1999, which is the most modern facility in the medical center.

The early Portsmouth Naval Hospital witnessed major historical events through the men and women they cared for. After two decades of peace, the Mexican American War brought in the first soldiers wounded in action. Just a few years later, the hospital was faced with a catastrophic epidemic, when Yellow Fever broke out in the community. At that time, the Naval hospital opened its doors to the public because the demand for medical care was so great. The Civil War would bring another large influx of patients, as the hospital served both union and confederate soldiers. Years later, the hospital would even care for Spanish prisoners of the Spanish American War. One of the Spanish Captains even wrote a thank you letter to the hospital for the high quality of care they received. The first president to visit the hospital was Theodore Roosevelt. When He came, he also visited the hospital's cemetery and unveiled a monument for the Army Navy Union who served in the Spanish American War. Jimmy Carter would also visit decades later during World War II.

In addition to the hospital, there are several research and teaching programs for new doctors, nurses and hospital corpsmen. The center also has nine branch clinics that offer additional assistance to families. Another service, offered to the families of loved ones dealing with a medical crisis, is the Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher House. The house can accommodate up to twenty-one people, with all the amenities of a family home. The goal of the house is to help families who wouldn't otherwise be able to stay together during their time of need. The Naval Medical Center Portsmouth really could tutor other hospitals in consistent quality care.
