About Port Ivory
Port Ivory is a neighborhood in Staten Island, New York. Port Ivory got its name from the P&G factory that served as a neighborhood landmark from 1907 to 1991. P&G is the company known for Ivory Soap. Ivory soap was invented in 1840, by the J.B. Williams Company. The original name of the soap was Ivorine. The Williams Company sold the recipe to P&G; who went to trademark the new recipe, and renamed it Ivory. The new name was inspired by the bible verse Psalm 45:8, “All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces whereby they have made thee glad.” Ivory soap has a special place in American culture because it really is a soap unlike any other.
Ivory’s first slogan was, “It Floats,” in 1891. At that time, James N. Gamble documented that he had discovered a way to make the soap bars float. When the soap is whipped, air pockets form that allow the bars to float on water. This phenomena became a large part of P&G’s marketing strategy. There is another story that claims the floating soap bars were created accidentally, when a worker left the mixing machine on too long. The story says that the company did not want to lose money on the over whipped batch so they sold the defective soap bars anyway. Once the public learned that the soap floated, they sent in letters declaring how much they loved the new product. So, P&G decided to make extended mixing standard procedure. P&G have discredited the story, and used Gambles notes to proved that the floating soap bars were intentional.
Today, the soap bars are known for floating, and expanding. A common household experiment involves an Ivory Soap bar and the microwave. Apparently, the same air pockets that make the bars float, cause it to expands during rapid heat exposure. When microwaved, the soap bar grows and expands into a fluffy mound. Once the bar cools, it hardens into the new cloudlike shape, and can be used as normal; it will even still float.
Ivory’s other popular slogan was. “9944100% Pure.” This 1895 slogan was inspired by an analysis done by an independent laboratory. The analysis was meant to prove that Ivory soap was purer than its main competitor of the time, Castile soap. This slogan became so popular that it is referenced several times in pop culture. It has been turned into popular song lyrics, and has even been quoted in a couple of movies. Some might remember that it’s what Willy Wonka said when he opened up the chocolate factory doors in the 1971 film, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. P&G could tutor other companies in creating memorable slogans.
