About Ponte Vedra Beach
About eighteen miles from downtown Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra Beach is on the Atlantic coast of Florida. For years, school children were taught that Spanish explorer Ponce de León first came to the coast of Florida seeking the “Fountain of Youth.” While it is true that de León sailed up the coast and probably even viewed the beautiful beaches which would later become Ponte Vedra, he was not searching for the mythical fountain. Records indicate that de León was simply exploring the area for the Spanish crown and for personal glory. Some fifty years later the Spanish would establish a capital city just south of Ponte Vedra at St. Augustine. In fact, St. Augustine is the oldest European city in North America. Today, de León is remembered with a 17-foot tall statue along the A1A Highway and at St. Augustine’s Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park where visitors still take some water from the parks stone well just in case the legend is true. Despite the early sightings, Ponte Vedra remained mostly uninhabited until the early 1900’s when the discovery of titanium, and zircon brought mining companies to the area which came to be known as Mineral City. When the demand for these minerals dropped after World War I developers made plans to convert the seaside town for resort and residential purposes. To make the place more appealing they changed the name to Ponte Vedra (Latin for old bridge). During World War II, Ponte Vedra Beach made the headlines when it was discovered that four Nazi agents had landed with the purpose of committing terrorist acts on American citizens. Luckily, one of the conspirators from a group which landed in New Jersey had second thoughts and confessed to the FBI. The four men who landed at Ponte Vedra were executed. Today, Ponte Vedra Beach is an affluent suburb of Jacksonville and home to the Professional Golf Association’s headquarters.
A Ponte Vedra Beach tutor can help you catch up on your most demanding academic subjects so you can time to enjoy the beaches and the greater Jacksonville metropolitan area. On the southern edge of Ponte Vedra along the A1A, Mickler’s Landing features pink tinted beaches and the usual amenities including plenty of parking. The beach has been a favorite with locals for many years, partly because of its secluded nature and the wooden walkway which accesses the beach. Mickler’s Landing is also dog friendly and is an excellent place to enjoy the surf and sand.
South of Ponte Vedra across Mickler Road the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve spans more than 73,000 acres of wetlands and wilderness which has been protected since 1999. The reserve boasts a wide variety of wildlife including aquatic and amphibious species such as dolphins, manatees, alligators and river otters. The reserve is also home to eagles, falcons and pelicans. Hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking and horseback riding are available to visitors and the reserve maintains over nine miles of natural trails where the abundance of wildlife on the reserve can be viewed.
With more than 450 years of history, St. Augustine, just south of Ponte Vedra, is a popular tourist destination in northeast Florida. One of the main historical sites is Castillo de San Marcos, a 315-year old masonry fort overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. There are a variety of things to do at the Castillo including a visit to the large courtyard interior and gun deck with outstanding views of the city. Fort Matanzas also stands as a remnant of the Spanish past. Visitors can take a brief ferry ride to the fort which periodically stages reenactments of important historical events.
