"In the Roaring Twenties, Piedmont, California was known as the “City of Millionaires.” There were more millionaires per square mile than in any city in the United States. Wow! Notable author Jack London wrote of the Alaskan pioneering spirit in his famous novel: Call of the Wild – 1903 -- while living on Blair Avenue in a house that still exists in Piedmont today. Clint Eastwood resided in Piedmont and attended Piedmont schools. John F. Kennedy's Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara grew up in Piedmont, where his family lived on Annerley, Road. Country Joe McDonald resided in Piedmont in the 1970s. Charles R. Schwab, founder of his famously productive discount stock brokerage firm lived in Piedmont in the early 1980s. Piedmont is a city of only 11,000 residents, in the Bay area. Its name, Italian in origin, means foothill. In the early years and still today many Italian Americans settled in the Piedmont hills. Plus, it has an endowment fund of about $6 million!
