    About Perry

An apple a day keeps the doctor away. In an effort to teach us to eat healthily, we were told this say as children. For most of us, apples were everywhere when we were growing up. Classrooms were covered in red apple decor, teachers were given them on almost every special occasion, and we were told they are an important part of a healthy diet. But, without one person we may not have had our apple pies and cider. Without Johnny Appleseed, we may not have our apple orchards we love so much. Johnny Appleseed was a frontier nurseryman who traveled the Midwest planting apple seeds. He came across many towns two did now know the first and planted orchards for them. Perry Township’s first apple orchard was planted by Johnny Appleseed himself.

Although, the story of Johnny Appleseed we were taught in school led us to believe he was just a legend. But Johnny was a real person. He really did spread the apple seeds across the Midwest. His real name, though, was John Chapman from Leominster, Massachusetts. He has been pictured as a dreamy wanderer, spreading his apple seeds wherever he went. Contrary to his legend, he was an extremely organized businessman. Legend is correct when it says Johnny’s dream was to produce so many apples that no one would go hungry. At the age of 18, Johnny headed west with his younger brother. Once he was in his twenties, he headed out on his own, leaving his brother to farm with their father. Legends have said Johnny dropped seeds along roads and streams as he traveled. This was not the case. He meticulously planted seeds. Johnny’s seeds were planted in nurseries after he carefully selected the perfect spot. He took care to fence the trees in and raise them up for settlers in exchange for food and shelter.

Throughout over 50 years of efforts, Johnny managed to plant thousands of productive apple trees. He was always seen carrying a leather bag filled with apple seeds that he got from cider mills for free. Johnny appeared to most as a poor man. He never wore or owned extravagant things. His money was earned by selling apple trees and land. Johnny’s cash never found a home in a bank. Rather, he created an elaborate system to bury his money. Money was not what Johnny was after. He sought knowledge from fellow settlers and numerous Native American tribes. Settlers knew him as the “apple seed man” and then as Johnny Appleseed. Through his legends and his truth, Johnny Appleseed accomplished what he set to do and spread his love for apple trees across the country.
