About Palm Beach Gardens
Palm Beach Gardens is a relative newcomer to the greater Palm Beach area. Its inception dates back to 1959 when John D. MacArthur, a wealthy insurance magnate and landowner, announced plans to develop approximately 4,000 acres and provide homes for 55,000 people in a new community. His vision was to transform the land from miles of dairy cattle grazing and pine forests to a well-planned town with waterways, pine and shade trees and of course, homes, schools, houses of worship and a vibrant downtown. As of 2013, Palm Beach Gardens was home to 50,699 residents.
Malls, spas, golf, fine dining, shopping and deep sea diving are among Palm Beach Gardens’ many delightful attractions. The Gardens Mall hosts numerous brand name stores as well as a pleasant food court to nourish the hungry shopper. On Sunday, locals and visitors alike head to the Gardens Green Market, located in the city hall municipal complex. The Market draws rave reviews for its cider donuts, smoothies, herbs, cheeses, fresh fruit and veggies and even has musicians to serenade the browsers and noshers. Locally made arts and crafts are also featured.
The Professional Golfers' Association of America has its headquarters in the city and has held the annual Honda Classics Pro Tour since 2007 at the PGA National Resort and Spa. For golfers and non-golfers alike, a visit to the Resort is a must. The hotel offers spa services, a playground, a lagoon pool and seven different eating spots.
There are 12 golf courses within the city limits, including a course owned by the municipality which is open to the public Water-based sports rank high on the list of available outdoor activities. Several companies offer deep sea fishing tours, kayak rentals, scuba diving and snorkeling. People who have gone diving have spotted a wide variety of marine life including turtles, bull and lemon sharks, eels and grouper during their spawning season. And for beach walks and just plain relaxing, nearby Juno Beach and Singer Island are recommended. Frenchman's Forest Natural Area offers good hiking trails to view migrating warblers, the occasional hawk and other birds, and a pond with fish.
A visit to MacArthur Boulevard to view the Banyon trees will shed light on a bit of city history. As a landmark of the new community, John MacArthur had an 80 year old banyan tree relocated from nearby Lake Park where it was slated to be cut down for development; later on other banyans were added. In January 2007, the great-grandson (Alexandre Renoir) of the renowned French Impressionist artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir, presented a painting to the city which depicts the Gardens’ banyan tree. It is on display at the city hall on North Military Trail.
