When the Spanish arrived in the middle of the 18th century, the Luiseno Indians lived here. Missions were built and ranches were established, and soon the area that is now Oceanside was filled with thriving farms and cattle grazed throughout the fields.

Families love living in Oceanside because there is so much to do here. With many parks and recreational areas throughout the city, residents also have easy access to beautiful beaches, and the ever-popular Oceanside Pier. It is for the same reason that Oceanside is attractive to tourists — the beach is always busy, year-round, and the Pier is known to be one of the longest wooden piers along the Pacific Coast. Those that love to surf should definitely visit the California Surf Museum that is located in the downtown sector of Oceanside.

Movie buffs will be interested in the fact that a scene from Top Gun was filmed in a house here in Oceanside. If you’ve seen the movie, you’ll remember a romantic scene between Top Gun’s main characters played by Kelly McGillis and Tom Cruise… that was shot in one of Oceanside’s beautiful houses! Not surprisingly, Oceanside has many beautiful homes, overlooking the gorgeous Pacific Ocean.

The downtown area of Oceanside is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. MainStreet Oceanside has a plethora of restaurants, shops, art galleries, and yoga studios; there really is something for everyone. Downtown is also the hub of community activity in Oceanside, with street festivals, farmers markets, and parades happening year-round. There’s always something going on.

Served by the Oceanside Unified School District along with five other school districts, residents of Oceanside are provided with a wide selection of public, private, and charter schools. These districts are known for providing a high quality of education, as well as great teachers and school staff. For students that may need a little extra help, local Oceanside tutors are available.
