The catalyst for Oak Park’s sudden growth spurt was a bill passed and signed into law on June 22nd 1944 by President Roosevelt; it was known as the G.I. Bill. This bill changed lives as it allocated millions of dollars into the pockets of those who had served their country loyally in the Second World War. All veterans were eligible to benefit from hefty government subsidies except for those who were dishonorably discharged. The “American Legion,” an organization that was originally formed in Paris by three officers of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF), directly following the First World War, pushed the G.I. Bill also known as “The Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944,” through Congress. These men had no option but to band together and demand money there and then. The “Bonus Army” was the term coined by the media for the disgruntled veterans who marched in 1932 in Washington D.C. after feeling cheated and helpless.

In Oak Park the injection of funds into the community following the G.I. Bill led to exponential growth. The population of the town multiplied by seven, growing from a rather humble 5000 to over 35000 in a short ten years.
