About North Miami Beach
The self-proclaimed “city that has it all”, North Miami Beach, Florida, features a centralized location, pleasant climate, and lush environment. In between Miami and Ft. Lauderdale on the map, North Miami Beach is a beautiful city, being both family friendly and a popular tourist destination.
With a rich history of development and progress, North Miami Beach has seen a lot of change since its incorporation in 1927. At that time, it was named Fulford, after Captain William H. Fulford of the United States Coast Guard.
Contrary to what its name suggests, North Miami Beach no longer directly touches any coastline, though it is only a short drive from beach access. Any residents of this beautiful area of the Sunshine State and testify to the beautiful location and proximity to many of Florida’s popular beaches. Haulover Park and Haulover Beach, both in operation by Dade County Parks and Recreation Department, are well known for their “clothing optional” beaches, so it is always a good idea to check before taking the whole family along for a day in the sun!
One local attraction of historical significance in North Miami Beach is the authentic Medieval Spanish monastery, the St. Bernard de Clairvaux Church. Built in Sacramenia, Segovia, Spain during the twelfth century, this stone building was purchased by William Randolph Hearst in the 1920s and shipped to the United States. A few decades later, it was reassembled and built in North Miami Beach after Hearst’s death. It is now a very popular tourist destination, and a popular local spot for weddings and special events.
North Miami Beach is home to one of the largest and most iconic fountains in South Florida. One of five fountains planned to be built by the main entrances to the city, this fountain is known as the Fulford Monument. It is also noted as the prominent feature of the North Miami Beach city logo!
With the beauty of a tropical climate also comes the potential hazard of hurricane season. Though devastating storms are not common each season, a particularly devastating storm know as the “Hurricane of 1926” wrecked havoc on the area. It completely demolished the speedway and local radio station. This storm was responsible for ending the South Florida real estate boom of the early 1900s, and it took years to clean up and rebuild devastated neighborhoods and buildings. North Miami Beach didn’t begin to experience growth again until after the second World War.
