About Norfolk
Norfolk, Virginia is considered the historic, urban, financial and cultural center of the Hampton Roads region. As the cultural heart of region, Norfolk is home to several museums, performing arts companies, annual festivals, and parades. These artistic points of interest include the National Maritime Center, the MacArthur Memorial, the Hermitage Foundation Museum, and the Virginia Opera, Stage Company, and Symphony Orchestra. This area is also home to several arenas, theatres, and a Performing Art Center.
Perhaps the most notable attraction is the Chrysler Museum of Art. The Chrysler Museum of Art has been deemed the finest art museum in the state of Virginia. The museum was founded in 1933, under the name Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences. After Walter P. Chrysler Jr. donated his extensive collection to the museum in 1971, the museum changed its name. The donation from Chrysler is what made the museum one of the major art museums in the Southeastern United States.
The Chrysler museum is home to over 30,000 objects and spans over 5,000 years. The art was gathered from around the world and the core collection includes many American and European paintings and sculptures that date back to the middle ages. The museum also has ancient artworks from Asia, Africa, and Pre-Columbian America. The museum has decorative arts, photography and the world’s greatest collections of glass. In addition to museum’s permanent collection, there are changing exhibitions from around the world. Visitors of the museum enjoy guided tours, lectures, films, concerts, family days, programs and publications.
The art the museum is also home to the Jean Outland Chrysler Library, which is one of the largest art libraries in the South. The collection spans the whole history of world art and is a valuable resource to the art community. In addition to the permanent collection of materials and catalogues, the library subscribes to hundreds of art journals and exchanges publications with four hundred other art museums around the world. The museum also administers two historic houses in Norfolk; the Moses Myers House, and the Willoughby-Baylor House. The Moses Myers House was built in 1792, and sits as an example of a life in the early 19th Century. The house contains seventy percent of its original contents, and is set up with all authentic furnishings. The Willoughby-Baylor House also features early Norfolk history, particularly the area’s naval and military heritage.
Overall, the Chrysler Museum of Arts hopes to enrich, educate, and inspire visitors as they enjoy beautiful creations from around the world and interesting artifacts from their own backyard. The museum actively tutors visitors in the importance of preserving art and artifacts, so that they can be enjoyed for generations to come.
