About Norco
As of 2006 Norco is better known as “Horsetown U.S.A.”, and is an anomaly in modern day suburban developments. Instead of sidewalks, Norco has horse trails, and much like you have seen in the “Western” movies, in Norco, riders come into town and tie their horses at one of the many hitching rails and corrals placed close to businesses.
Norco tutors are proud that Norco has maintained its distinct identity. The architecture of Norco must meet the Western aesthetic, per city ordinances it must be rural, informal, traditional, rustic and equestrian oriented. City politics are dominated by welfare concerns over animal keeping and how to maintain the status quo as the area faces suburbanization. The Norco Hills area specifically has faced an increasing amount of Orange County commuters who are buying up property at inflated prices, leaving very little provisions for animal keeping.
Understandably Norco tutors focus heavily on animal welfare, as there are as many equine residents here as there are humans. Much is the inherent love for animals within this city, it was unsurprising that Norco citizens banded together to provide a safe place for horses and other animals being evacuated from the wildfires that savaged San Bernardino County and San Diego County in 2003. Following on from this disaster, shortly afterwards the community of Norco founded the Norco Animal Rescue Team (NART), recognizing the need for an organized group to help evacuate animals in the region that is prone not only to wildfires but to floods and other dangers. This group regularly meets and mobilizes, and has been the driving force behind multiple major animal rescues where animals have been found stranded in canyons or ravines.
One of the biggest events on the Norco calendar is the annual Norco Fair that takes place on Labor Day weekend. Leading up to the event volunteers encourage ticket sales through their website dedicated solely to the fare, www.norcofair.org. They meet on the second Monday of every month in preparation, and organize advertising for local businesses and space for vendors to sell their wares. Also as a draw for younger members of the community they hold the “Miss Horsetown U.S.A. Pageant” and the “Miss Teen Horsetown U.S.A. Pageant”. For the winner of the former, this could lead on to winning the “Miss California U.S.A. Pageant.” Tickets are in the form of colorful button pins. To further increase town participation a competition is held annually to design the pin that everyone must wear. The girls competing to be crowned “Miss Horsetown U.S.A.” sell the buttons door to door, and there are monetary prizes awarded for those who achieve the highest amount of ticket/button sales.
