About Newnan
Less than an hour southwest of Atlanta you will find the city of Newnan, Georgia. Newnan is considered to be within the metropolis of Atlanta, and has easy access to all of Atlanta’s “big city” amenities. Residents enjoy a high quality of life in this beautiful city filled with a unique southern charm.
With its origin dating back to the early 1800s, Newnan’s namesake was a General from North Carolina. In its early days, Newnan’s main industry was cotton, as this area of country featured prominent cotton farms that were primarily reliant on the slave industry. As the Civil War ravaged much of the south, Newnan still contains many original buildings and architecture common to that period of time. The reason for this preservation was the fact that Newnan acted as a hospital city for local troops.
Interestingly enough, Newnan is also where you will find the Coweta County African American Heritage Museum. One of only a few museums of its kind in the state, the Coweta County African American Heritage Museum features large collections of family records and accounts of life in the south for an African American slave. If you are ever traveling through Georgia, Newnan is worth putting on your list of places to visit if even to just attend a tour though this museum. An important part of the South’s history, locals are proud of their hometown’s commitment to preserving such artifacts and collections.
With a growing population, Newnan has also seen a significant growth in business and commercial development. No longer must locals travel to Atlanta for the goods and services they need on a weekly basis. Newnan recently opened a very popular shopping center called Ashley Park, which is a mall containing many large department stores and some smaller boutiques as well. Many fine restaurants can be found in the Ashley Park mall as well.
Newnan has its focus on educating its children and providing a high quality of life for its families. A “Kids Activity Book” can be found online, teaching children about Newnan’s history and providing fun activities for young kids as they learn about their hometown. When it comes to parks and recreational facilities, Newnan provides many wonderful facilities that come with many different amenities for community members to enjoy. One of the more “grand” parks, the Greenville Street Park, features an amphitheater, nature paths, picnicking areas, and historic pieces of architecture. A babbling fountain provides a relaxing ambiance to all venture here.
