About New York City
Fly a plane over New York City. Why not? It’s an aerial view of the buildings -- buildings, buildings, buildings reaching to the sky, and -- its heart -- in the Center: Central Park, New York City.
What a fantastic idea that was – to build a park in the center of the biggest city in America. It launched the birth of parks! Yep, Central Park, New York City was the very first landscaped park in the good ol USA. Mid 1800, someone who had seen parks in the likes of London and Paris said, “We can outdo them!”
So they went for it – acquiring 700 acres to provide more than a bit of beauty for the big city. Between the streets of town, there was still some swamp-land, bluffs and rocks; and they dug up 143 acres more, totaling 843. Designers vied for the golden opportunity to plan the creation. And they did design a magnificent pastoral landscape of rolling meadows. It was to expand like the vision of America, uninterrupted, and laced with country roads. Then, they added forty bridges.
The they were a mere 20,000 workers: Yankee engineers, Irish laborers, German gardeners, and native born American stone cutters. It was a bit of challenge, this American dream park, requiring moving 3 million cubic yards of soil, and planting 270,000 trees and shrubs: Central Park, New York City, USA!
What a treat! The townsfolk went carriage riding, walking, running, skipping, hopping, and skating on the frozen wintry lake. In 1865, the park received 7 million visitors a year. I wonder how many students visit it today. Just think, you can wander about the park, enjoy nature in the city, and practice your multiplication tables, or chat with a New York City tutor about life’s challenges in architectural creation, landscaping the world of your dreams.
And, now we have other things to mount besides horses, skate boards! You might skate-chat with your tutor learning math, language, history, science, the latest testing techniques. Or learn about history! By the late 1800’s, they’d added carriage parades to Central Park activities, and their winter skating was contrasted by summer concerts. Then, in 1871 they added a zoo!
The sky’s the limit. In 1927, a playground was added, then a sports arena, swimming pool, playing fields, and museums. In yet another twenty years, a genuine skating rink was added, 1950’s, and rock concerts -- in the 1960’s. Done? Nope. Future decades added more and more: castles, Cleopatra’s Needle, even a real National Weather Station. Whatever the weather, Central Park is a treat. Row a boat about the Central Park Lake; or study Egyptian history while climbing a model pyramid! Now, and in the past, Central Park, New York, the first park in the good ol USA, provides a sanctuary from the busy city life. More than that: it is a huge meal of robust activity – to feed youth’s journey to the American Dream.
