    About Moon

Sandwiched between the Ohio River and Interstate 376, Moon Township is a suburb about 17 miles north of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Originally hunting grounds of the Iroquois, the land was settled by the English in the middle of the 18th century. In 1788 those settlers officially founded the place as Moon Township, taking the name from the moon-like curvature of the Ohio River. For the next 150 years Moon Township attracted more farmers but life remained quiet into the 20th century. In the 1940’s, however, the town became an important part of the effort to win World War II. In fact, an entire neighborhood overlooking the Ohio River sprang up to house workers who spent their days building ships for Dravo Corporation. The neighborhood, known as Mooncrest, is now recognized as a National Historic District. Beginning in 1943 workers started moving into Mooncrest to help build “Landing Ship Tanks” (LST), a new type of attack craft which could land up to 160 soldiers directly onto a beach. The LST was ultimately instrumental in winning the war as they were used in the invasion of Normandy in 1944 and on various Pacific island beaches in 1944 and 1945. In conjunction with its other plants along the Ohio and Mississippi rivers and U.S. Steel in the Pittsburgh area, Dravo produced 670 LST’s in one year. Dravo also manufactured destroyers, sub-chasers and minesweepers. After the war the federal government sold off the houses in Mooncrest, some to the original workers who were content to stay in their solid red brick structures in the post-war years when they would be ultimately revered as America’s “Greatest Generation.” Since 1945, Moon Township has continued to grow, especially after the building of the Pittsburgh International Airport on the city’s western edge in 1951. Today, Moon Township benefits from a combination of new projects and redevelopment. The real estate website Niche has ranked it as one of the top 25 suburbs of Pittsburgh.

A Moon Township tutor will keep you caught up on your studies so you can take time away from the books to experience the interesting things to do in Moon Township and the surrounding areas. Moon Township has several public parks which provide recreational opportunities to residents. Robin Hill Park, Moon Park and Olson Park offer the usual amenities including athletic fields, basketball courts, hiking trails and playgrounds. 200-acre Robin Hill Park also features an authentic 1800’s log cabin and a 24-room Georgian style house which often serves as a backdrop for weddings.

Bird lovers will want to take the short drive from Moon Township into Pittsburgh to visit the National Aviary, the nation’s largest aviary and home to a wide variety of birds from all over the world. The aviary features Penguin Point, which includes interactive elements such as Penguin Connection, Little Peepers for youngsters and a bird feeding adventure. Founded in the 1950’s next to the Phipps Conservatory, the aviary is home to rare birds such as the Hyacinth macaw, Inca tern and spectacled owl. There are more than 500 birds representing 150 species at the aviary.

For something a little different, downtown Pittsburgh is also home to the Andy Warhol Museum. With the largest collection of the iconic artist’s work anywhere, the museum features paintings, drawings, photography, sculptures and wallpapers. Opened in May, 1994, the museum drew 25,000 visitors during its first weekend.
