Miamisburg, Ohio is known for the famous Hamburger Wagon. The Hamburger Wagon dates back to The Great Flood of 1913. That year, heavy rainfall caused several major rivers along the central and eastern United States to overflow. It is estimated that over six hundred and fifty people lost their lives in the Great Flood; and there was over $333 million of property damage, spanning thirteen of the eighteen affected states. Ohio suffered some of the greatest loss and damage, and over seventy percent of the total lives lost occurred there. Across the affected states, over a quarter of a million people were left homeless, in devastated towns that were left to rebuild and start over. The Great Flood of 1913 was the second deadliest flood in U.S.history; and is the largest weather disaster to have ever occurred in the state of Ohio.
Miamisburg was one of those devastated cities that found itself almost entirely underwater; most of the community was in need of shelter, food, and other basic necessities. The Red Cross set up a tent city at the top of Mound Hill, in an attempt to shelter those who were completely displaced; and Sherman Porter, a local Miamisburg resident, volunteered to feed those staying in tent city and the workers who were helping them. He knew that whatever was made needed to be warm, nutritious and easy to mass produce; so, he decided to make hamburgers. Using one of his favorite family recipes, Porter set up shop and began making enough hamburgers for anyone who was hungry. He spent days making hamburgers, and it wasn’t until the the waters receded and the city began to rebuild, that Porter stopped making them.
Soon, locals started to miss those delicious, “Porter Burgers;” and people began asking Porter to open his makeshift hamburger stand back up. He finally decided that he would open the stand on Saturdays; but it wasn’t long before he found himself a full time burger chef. The secret to Porter’s success is that he fries the hamburger meat to make a crisp and flavorful patty; then he serves it on a roll, with an onion, a pickle, and some salt and pepper. There is something to be said about the simplicity of the award winning burger.
The Hamburger Wagon has changed hands several times over the years, but those delicious fried hamburgers are still a crowd favorite. It was voted Dayton’s best burger joint in 2008; and was even featured in George Motz book, “Hamburger America: A State-By-State Guide to 100 Great Burger Joints.” Sometimes doing the right thing leads to rewards you could never expect. Porter could tutor us all in how to step up when we see people in need.
