About McCandless
Just a few miles north of the downtown, McCandless, Pennsylvania is considered one of Pittsburgh’s best suburbs by the real estate website Niche. Native Americans of various tribes most certainly crossed the Ohio River into western Pennsylvania and followed Pine Creek into what would later be McCandless to take advantage of the abundant hunting and fishing. Then a young officer of the British army, George Washington came through the region in 1753 on his way to Fort LoBouef to urge the French to abandon their claim on western Pennsylvania. French refusal sparked the French and Indian War which raged through the colonies for seven years (think Last of the Mohicans stuff). First settlements in the area didn’t come until later in the 1700’s with small farms cropping up here and there. A prominent lawyer in Pittsburgh in the 1850’s, Wilson McCandless came to the town in 1851, helping to found the community which would bear his name. McCandless later ascended to become a U.S. Federal Judge appointed by President James Buchanan in 1859. He served until his retirement in 1876. With growth in Pittsburgh and increased transportation opportunities the town expanded throughout the last half of the 1800’s and early 1900’s. Between 1930 and 1950 McCandless more than doubled its population. Today, McCandless is an affluent community receiving an overall grade of A+ by Niche with a median household income exceeding $75,000 a year.
It’s certain that a McCandless tutor will be able to get you caught up on your studies so you can take some time away from the books to enjoy the exciting things to do in McCandless and the greater Pittsburgh metropolitan region. North Park Lake in the northeast part of McCandless offers over 3,000 acres and a variety of outdoor and recreational opportunities. The park features a 65-acre lake with fishing and kayaking. Other amenities include 18-hole North Park Golf Course, Olympic size swimming pool, ice skating rink and five miles of hiking and biking trails. Recently the lake underwent a $21 million-dollar renovation to improve fishing conditions, the boat launch ramp and wildlife viewing areas.
Residents of McCandless benefit from being just 20 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh. The Strip District along the eastern shore of the Allegheny has developed into a popular destination for shoppers and foodies alike. Originally a hub for industrial mills and manufacturing, the area is now home to open-air farmer’s markets, street vendors, art galleries and trendy shops. An affiliate of the Smithsonian, the Heinz History Center in the Strip District offers six floors of permanent and rotating exhibits that chronicle the history of Pennsylvania and the United States. Displays include “#Pixburgh: A Photgraphic Experience” and “Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission.” The museum’s space is also home to the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum and the Fort Pitt Museum.
Local sports fans have several chances to see live action with professional teams representing the NFL, NHL and MLB. The ever-popular Steelers, winners of six world championships, play on the banks of the Allegheny and Ohio Rivers at Heinz Field. Next door, Major League Baseball’s Pirates compete in PNC Park. The reigning National Hockey League champions Pittsburgh Penguins skate at PPG Paints Arena across the river from the Steelers and Pirates.
