About Massillon
The founder of Massillon, Ohio had been a seaman before he headed for “the West,” to build on his spirit of adventure. He’d grown to like water. So James Duncan purchased land along the Tuscarawas River. Now, let’s live and swim on it, he thought being inclined to float aboard the sea; and the next thing he did was win state approval to build a canal. He was an industrious sort of guy, one that grew in his learning as he shifted from one occupation to another, much like a curious student at school. He wanted to vary his subjects and extended his ambition to every growing productivity and income.
Massillon Tutors are on hand to help in the journey of change in interest in subjects, and learning needed to grow in dreams and skills. Tutors can help youths ford the educational journey, in all areas from kindergarten through to the university. Growing education leads to growing prosperity. Duncan’s canal led to growing prosperity. In fact, it led to enormous prosperity, still characteristic of Massillon City today.
The Massillon founder’s canal building idea met with much enthusiasm! Canals in those early days became the vehicles of travel moving produce throughout the greater Ohio area. Men literally flooded in to begin the building, over 500 of them. It was dug to as much as 150 feet in width, a full 40 feet at its narrowest. In depth, it was about 50 feet in its journey through the budding town. Businesses sprouted too, all along the banks of the canal, officially inaugurated on July 4th, 1825. Over 10,000 people attended that celebration.
Duncan built a mighty dream from his nature and industry and knowledge. He met the challenge of growing knowledge as he explored new terrain in land mass and occupation. This can be fearful. But he incorporated others into his plans, utilizing their skills too. Whatever your needs in educational growth, Massillon’s trained tutors are on hand to help your achievement and growth.
Duncan’s dreams traversed the area of the West, now our Midwestern lands. He bought a hunk of it, then carved a canal across its face, and founded a city. In no time at all the area grew and thrived. The canal brought money to the town of Massillon and surrounding rural areas. The wheat industry grew through it. Farmers planted the land, harvested their wheat and took it to Massillon, dubbing it “Wheat City.”
Massillon thrived, and shifted over time, the canal carrying wheat, merchandise and coal. It grew more rapidly than any other commercial point on the waters of Ohio. The town continued to thrive as steel took a foothold on the landscape and train travel linked towns in the Cleveland area, affording even more unbounded educational and career opportunity today.
