About Marin County
According to Marin County tutors the ecological climate zone of Marin County is known as California Floristic Province (CFP). Within the CFP they a many varying habitats present which is highly unusual and leads to an abundant number of different plant and animal species.
Substantial sized areas of Marin County are therefore protected from development in order to preserve the rich biodiversity present. There are many state parks and open spaces within the county are plentiful. There are also over one hundred miles of hiking trails open to the general public for walking, jogging or biking that is maintained locally. The parks include:
Angel Island State Park, which includes the entire Angel Island and has spectacular views of Mount Tamalpais, and the Marin County Headlands.
China Camp State Park, which surrounds a Chinese American shrimp-fishing village and salt marsh. The Park has many popular Mountain Biking trails. China Camp State Park is a part of the San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve.
Mount Tamalpais State Park, which is locally referred to as Mount Tam is a natural arboretum of redwood and oak forests, and attracts more than half a million visitors each year. From the summit the views are breathtaking, with the ability to see for miles in all directions. From this point you can see San Francisco, the Farallon Islands, and the North and East Bay. If the weather permits you can also see the Sierra Nevada in the distance.
Olompali State Historic Park, which contains original adobe brick houses. The Californian Historical Landmark no.210, the oldest house north of the San Francisco Bay is located here. The adobe was constructed in 1776 for the Olompoli Chief. The land was made into a state park in 1977 when the 700 acre plot then called Rancho Olompali was purchased by the State of California.
Samuel P. Taylor State Park, which has glorious picturesque views from Barnabe Peak and includes redwood and grassland. The park was named for Samuel Penfield Taylor, a local entrepreneur who operated the “Camp Taylor Resort” a summer camp style venue which offered an escape for families from the city with a range of activities including fishing, swimming, boating, and dancing. He also built the Pacific Coast’s very first paper mill.
Tomales Bay State Park, which is divided into two sections with the Tomales Bay running in between them. The area of the park on the west is technically a part of the Point Reyes peninsula and is operated by the U.S. National Park Service. According to Marin County tutors Sir Francis Drake the English sea captain who circumnavigated the globe in a single expedition between 1577 and 1580, landed here in 1579. This was twenty five years before it was named “La Punta de Los Tres Reyes” (Point of the Three Kings) by the Spanish explorer Sebastian Vizcaino.
