About Maricopa
A city rich in Arizona history, Maricopa is a vibrant community in the south central part of the state. Located in the Gila River Valley, Maricopa is considered to be within the metropolitan area of Phoenix, and residents enjoy its convenient location. The diversity of this region of Arizona is unique, as the area that is now Maricopa has seen a lot of change in the past several centuries.
Looking back into the past few centuries of the land that is now Maricopa, you will find that this region is rich in “old west” American history. During California’s historic gold rush years, thousands of gold seekers made their way through what is now Maricopa along the traveling route. This area of Arizona features a number of water resources, the Gila River, the Santa Cruz River, and Vekol River, and the Santa Rosa River, all of which made this area a great stopping point on the southern trail. Despite being a desert-like environment, these rich water resources made Maricopa seem like an oasis.
When the mid 1800s came along, stagecoaches began to make Maricopa a main stop along their transportation route. A large local trade center employed many of Maricopa’s residents at the time, and the stagecoach business also provided a lot of local employment. When the railroad arrived in the late 1800s, Maricopa began to see an even greater influx of travelers and settlers.
In the mid 1900s, Maricopa saw cattle ranching and farming become popular, with a wide variety of fruit and nut crops being planted in the area. As time went on, the area continued to grow and become more residential. Business areas developed and corporations moved in.
Residents of Maricopa take great pride the diversity of their city, not only from its roots but also from before white settlers arrived to this region. Along the borders of the city, two Native American tribes have community settlements. These Native American neighbors provide even more ancient, rich history to this area of Arizona, and local museums do a great job of showing snapshots of this land’s diverse past while also honoring the culture of the tribes that were here for hundreds of years.
The Maricopa Unified School District prides itself on providing a very high quality of educational options to residents of Maricopa. Parents feel good about sending their children to the city’s schools. For families that wish to have more one-on-one attention, local Maricopa tutors can provide individualized instruction and help in getting students the extra resources they need to succeed.
