Tucked in a small northwest corner of Broward County, you will find Margate, a small, welcoming community with a clocktower; yet, it is a town with big-city attractions. A haven for nature lovers, it boasts over 105 acres of parkland for family residents and tourists alike to enjoy.

If you’re a walker, hiker, or biker, the best place to head to is nearby Tradewinds Park, which offers 627-acres of parkland and trails for your pleasure. Tradewinds Park also is home to a bass-filled pond, where fishing is allowed with a Florida State freshwater fishing license. You may also enjoy a picnic under one of the many shelters provided, or rent sports equipment at the park office, such as volleyballs, soft balls and bats. You may also want to try your hand at an old-fashioned game of horseshoe, which is also available.

If a less strenuous activity is what you desire, you will also discover an 18-hole disc golf course. Wondering what disc golf is? It’s a modern version, created in the 1960’s, from the old-fashioned type of golf crossed with a Frisbee — also known as a flying disc. Believe it or not, this game was thought to have been played more than a century ago, but has expanded to over 3000 disc courses in the United States and overseas. There are five disc golf courses in Broward County alone!

If the real thing is what you’re looking for, you’re sure to find it among the many 18-hole golf courses in Margate. One of them, The Carolina Golf Club is semi-private and features an expansive golf shop, and a clubhouse with a southern plantation flair. There is also a nine-hole golf course in Margate, called Eagle Lakes, which is open to the public.

In addition to the abundance of nature-themed attractions in the area, there is a wealth of varied recreation to entertain your entire family. One of the most popular places is the city-managed Calypso Cove Aquatic Facility, located within the boundaries of Royal Palm Park in Margate. With a Caribbean theme, the facility boasts a zero-depth activity pool with water-spraying play structures such as marine animals and palm trees, a six-lane lap pool, and an open or closed slide that lands you in the plunge pool. Swimming lessons are also offered. In addition to two pavilions, the park itself contains basketball courts, picnic tables, and a fishing dock.

Just minutes more from Margate, just to the south of Tradewinds Park, you can experience yet another nature park — Butterfly World, the largest butterfly and aviary park of its kind in the world. Housing 10,000 plus butterflies, with over 150 species fluttering between thousands of unique thriving plants, you and your family are certain to be delighted.
