Los Olivos, California, dates back to the 1860s with stagecoaches, but it didn’t hit the ground running until the 1880s. As the story goes, twenty-two year old, New York native Alden March Boyd moved to the California area, planted 5,000 olive trees, and named his land Rancho de los Olivos. Eventually in 1887, the Pacific Coast Railway line extension was completed, and the developers decided to name the area after Boyd’s ranch.

And so Los Olivos was born.

The town has several claims to fame. From historic landmarks such as Mattei’s Tavern and first-rate college prep schools like Dunn School to renowned wineries and tasting rooms including that of Fess Parker’s. There’s no shortage of reasons to brag about Los Olivos. Plus, tutors in Los Olivos are happy to help students brag about their success in the classroom.

The picture-perfect country town perfectly mixes down-home charm with modern, posh art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants. It’s just as common to see cowboy hatted locals gossiping on their porches as it is to spot a celebrity. In fact, Los Olivos has been called home by the likes of Cheryl Ladd, Noah Wyle, David Crosby, Bo Derek, Kelly Le Brock, Steven Seagal, John Forsythe, Ray Stark, Robert Cray, and The Hoff, himself, David Hasselhoff. Running a few miles both south and north of Los Olivos will land visitors at two famous properties: former president Ronald Reagan’s ranch, Rancho del Cielo, and Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch, respectively.

Los Olivos’ celebrity-studded residential roster has seen countless hours of combined time on the silver screen, but Los Olivos, itself, has seen some screen time. The town has been the setting for the fictional location of Mayberry in the made-for-TV movie Return to Mayberry, and several locations of Los Olivos were used for the film, Sideways, featuring Paul Giamatti, as well as for episodes of The Bachelor.
