About Lindenhurst
According to Lindenhurst tutors, Lindenhurst was one of the areas most heavily impacted by hurricane Sandy in October 2012. One of the long lasting affects of the storm has been a positive one. The shared tragedy brought the community closer together than ever before, and residents now have a deeper respect and empathy for one another. The village was truly transformed by the storm.
Lindenhurst was affected by one of the worst storm surges on Long Island during the hurricane, and saw water rushing in at a peak of eight feet. The village of Lindenhurst is divided by the Montauk Highway and following the hurricane the entire area south of the highway was ravaged by the flood waters, in some areas the residual water reached in excess of six feet, and it took over 48 hours post the hurricane for the floodwater to subside.
Another result of the hurricane was horrific fires that engulfed many houses south of the Montauk Highway. Firefighters from the neighboring villages stepped in and helped which drastically reduced the potential spread of the fires. Babylon Firefighters were submerged in water between four and six feet deep attempting to prevent further spreading of fires.
The steep floodwaters meant that many people’s homes were entirely destroyed by the flooding. As you would expect many homes were in part submerged by the waters and even after the waters subsided the structures of many homes were compromised and were uninhabitable. Visitors to the area after the storms hit spoke about a stench that emanated from the households, especially from the properties that were located closest to the bay and were submerged the longest. After the water did eventually subside even though the outside of the houses looked fine, the insides were completely ruined and full of mold and rot. Residents lost most of their belongings, and those items that were not damaged were horrifically looted by those taking advantage of the unoccupied inhabitable properties. Some residents returned to their homes to prevent such looting and were forced to reside in unsanitary environments until repairs could be undertaken.
Lindenhurst tutors tell us that even though many years have passed since the tragedy of the storm and aftermath in Lindenhurst that some residents are still yet to fully recover both financially and to repair their homes to how they were before the storm. However the pride in the community and the spirit between community members remains intact and they are very grateful for all of the help and support received both internally and externally following the catastrophic event.
