The Golden Poppy, belonging to the Papaveraceae family, grows wild throughout California, and became the state flower in 1903. Every year April 6 is California Poppy Day, and May 13-18 is Poppy Week. The Festival occurs in the month of April to commemorate Poppy Day, and is a helpful reminder as to why California is referred to as The Golden State of the United States. Its flower, sunshine, and residents are golden—they collectively light up wherever they are placed and illuminate the best attributes of the world around them.
