About Lake Worth
American farmers searching for the best place to grow winter vegetables and the 1920’s land boom tell the story of the early beginnings of the town of Lake Worth in Palm Beach County. One of the remaining historical structures that provides a glimpse into Lake Worth’s past is the grand remnant of the “Roaring 20’s” — the Gulf Stream Hotel, built in 1923. It is situated on Lake Avenue in the heart of the city “Where The Tropics Begin.” It is enviably on the edge of the ocean, next to the Intracoastal Waterway, and within walking distance to restaurants, shops, and the Lake Worth Golf course.
The elegant Gulf Stream Hotel, once known as the “Jewel of Lake Worth,” was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 11, 1983. This historic hotel has been restored on several occasions and is presently in the midst of another restoration, with a projected cost of over one million dollars. The original old world hotel will be expanded to add 135 modernized rooms to its original, charming 115 hotel rooms, with retail shops and additional parking added to the plan.
Another one of the remaining historical structures in Lake Worth is the Lake Worth Playhouse, one of the oldest buildings in South Florida. It is located on the same space as the original Oakley Theatre, one of the oldest commercial buildings registered with the Art Deco Society of Palm Beach County. During the 1920’s when movies were becoming extremely popular, it was the dream of Lucien and Clarence Oakley, to construct a palace where movies and vaudeville actors could perform.
With a price tag of $150,000 during the beginning of the Great Depression, the Oakley Theatre swung open its doors on November 3, 1924 to delight the first movie goers to a silent movie adapted from “Welcome Stranger,” a broadway play. On opening night there were two performances, complete with a Wurlitzer pipe organ, costing $10,000, and a concert five-piece orchestra, who performers traveled from nearby Fort Lauderdale.
Lake Worth Playhouse is a non-profit theatre for the community. Today, the mission of the Lake Worth Playhouse is to present premium educational, artistic, high quality entertainment by community volunteer programs. There is something for everyone to enjoy during the year, including fun shows for children, beautiful ballets, captivating concerts, operas, comedy shows, musicals, cultural performances, Broadway shows, and premieres of all kinds.
