About La Puente
To the east of Los Angeles, you will find the smaller city of La Puente, in the midst of the San Gabriel Valley of Southern California. Despite its modest size, La Puente has a rich history, as the area has seen a lot of change in the past few hundred years. Families that live in La Puente these days love their life here, and thanks to the close proximity to Los Angeles, residents have access to all of the amenities that L.A. has to offer. Many La Puente residents live here and work in Los Angeles, as the commute is only about twenty miles.
Not uncommon to this region of California, La Puente was originally inhabited by the Tongva Native American tribe. It wasn't called La Puente back then, of course, and was instead named Awingna by the local people. Translated, Awingna means "abiding place", which is a very pleasant name for a community. When the Spanish took over this region in the late 1700s, the land was divided into a rancho, and was called Rancho La Puente ("la puente" meaning "the bridge" in reference to a bridge over the local San Gabriel River). The local mission was established as the Mission of San Gabriel and had jurisdiction over Rancho Le Puente. It wasn't until the rancho was privatized that plots of lands began to develop into large and successful farms, with the main export being walnuts and fruit.
In the early 1900s, La Puente's claim to fame was its walnut production that took place on the fertile land that made up the city. La Puente was actually home to the largest producer and packer of walnuts in the world. In modern times, many of the farms and agricultural areas in La Puente have been redeveloped into housing areas and neighborhoods, and despite the urbanization of La Puente, the city still holds on to relics from the past. Visitors can stop by the Workman and Temple Family Homestead Museum in a neighboring city to learn more about this region of Southern California, along with its rich and unique history.
A very unique and humorous local landmark in La Puente is The Donut Hole. In the shape of a huge donut, this bakery directs cars to drive through the hole in the center to place their order. The Donut Hole's unique architecture has gained it a lot of attention nation-wide, and locals claim this to be a "must-see" while visiting La Puente.
When it comes to education, La Puente is served by three public school districts. These districts provide several schools for each level of education, and families that live here feel that the local schools are high quality institutions. A few private schools and charter schools are also available to local students, providing parents with options to choose from when deciding what type of schooling is right for their child. Any student that may need extra after-school help can seek out and hire local La Puente tutors. These tutors are well-trained and ready to help each student reach their educational goals.
