Known as the “Gateway to the Gulf”, La Marque is a small city in southeastern Texas with plenty of unique flavor and country charm. With major highways and important routes, including the Gulf Freeway, crossing through its city limits, La Marque really is the gateway to the Gulf Coast of Texas. Families love their life here in La Marque – a slow pace, small town feel provides a sense of safety and community.

Another nickname for the city, La Marque is sometimes referred to as “Buttermilk Station”, and no, its not because they make great pancakes here (though they probably do). During the years of the Civil War, La Marque was known for being a popular place for men in the army to stop to buy buttermilk as they traveled through Texas. This land was a big producer of cattle, and thus, dairy items like buttermilk were in high supply. After the Civil War ended, in the following decades, more families moved to the area and fruit farms began to pop up.

Today La Marque is known for its network of well-trafficked roads that pass through the city. Back in the early 1900s, La Marque was known for having four different railroads with stops in town. Even back then one could argue that La Marque was the “Gateway to the Gulf”! Despite having a lot of through traffic, La Marque’s railroad station was housed inside a private residence. Talk about small town life!

La Marque prides itself on hosting a wide variety of community events for its residents. Having many different activities and programs provides citizens of La Marque with a feeling of belonging, and also improves their quality of life. A few of the more popular programs that La Marque puts on includes Poetry Night, Family Game Night, KIDS Club, Art Club, and Dance and Grow. Serving all ages from young children to senior citizens, there really is something for everyone in La Marque.

With over twenty public parks and recreational facilities, La Marque provides many different green spaces and community centers for its residents. Families love all of the public parks that they can enjoy with their kids. Bayou City Park is a favorite for basketball lovers, featuring a full basketball court and an adjacent playground. Jaycee Park is another local favorite, as it features several baseball fields, a playground facility, picnicking areas, as well as an open space area.
