About La Jolla
Many people know that La Jolla, San Diego, is the proud home of the University of California San Diego; but what many people don't know, is that the prestigious university was once a floating research laboratory. The history of U.C. San Diego, begins in 1903 with the establishment of the Marine Biological Association of San Diego. Originally run by three amatuer reseachers, no one could predict that one day their research lab would become one of the largest ocean and earth science research centers in the world, and one of the top fifteen best research colleges in the world.
The research center, which is now known as Scripps Institution of Oceanography, grew and in 1912, it became a part of the University of California. What was once a small boat is now a campus that covers over 2000 acres of land. The college is divided into six smaller colleges and all of them have achieved notoriety; with some of the most impressive achievements made in the school of medicine.
In 1966, U.C. San Diego opened its first University Hospital. Throughout the next several decades the university would go on to open a Burn Center, Trauma Center, Cancer Center, the John M. and Sally B. Thornton Hospital and Perlman Ambulatory Center, Cardiovascular Center, Stem Cell Clinical Center and more. The university would be among the first to take huge steps forward in advanced medical procedures; including performing the first kidney transplant in the region, one of the first Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgeries, and the west coast’s first totally artificial heart transplant. In addition to excellent medical care, the university is known for research and development. In 2008, the Medical Center was one of the first in California to study the possibilities of using adult stem cells as a treatment for congestive heart failure. In 2014, School of Medicine students found that autism may begin during pregnancy, and in 2015, Nanoengineers created a temporary tattoo that measures glucose levels. U.C. San Diego researchers are busy looking for progress in how to treat, care for, and prevent major illnesses and disabilities. The U.C. San Diego School of Medicine could tutor many medical institutions in how to continue moving forward with medical advancements and technological progress.
The University of California,San Diego, has an impressive amount of accomplishments and not just in the medical field. US San Diego alumni, faculty, and researchers have earned many prestigious medals and honors including 20 Nobel Prizes, 8 National Medals of Science, and two Pulitzer Prizes. In addition, the University has hosted several world famous leaders such as the Queen of England, the Dalai Lama, President Clinton and Vice President Al Gore.
