Before Katy had its modern name, the area was known as “Cane Island”. With a large creek running through this region, this well-irrigated land was ideal for growing sugar cane. Surrounded by untamed prairie grasses and weeds, a dense area of cane grew, as if it was its own island. As the railroad came to the area in the late 1800s, “Cane Island” was renamed “Katy”, after the nickname of the local railroad that passed through. With the development of the railroad, the population of Katy grew rapidly, with new business coming to the area as well.

In recent years, Katy has been named on of the highest growing areas in the United States. With beautiful neighborhoods and a nice location within the metropolis of Houston, it is not hard to see why Katy is so desirable. Large corporations have made their home in Katy, including Igloo Corporation and Academy Sports and Outdoors. Katy also houses many BP offices, which house corporate offices that control and oversee local operations.

With a very involved tourism department, the city of Katy welcomes visitors with open arms. The City of Katy Convention and Tourism Bureau boasts that there really is something for everyone in Katy. If you’re into local architecture and history, you should definitely take a tour of the Ancestral Homes of Katy. You can easily check out these historic buildings on foot or by car; just follow the markers and plaques around the city.

Summers in Katy can be hot and humid, as is true of this region of the United States. One of the best retreats from the heat in Katy is the Typhoon Texas water park, which features some of the most amazing water slides and features that you’ve ever seen. The Typhoon Texas park also boasts some of the cleanest water that you’ll find in a water park throughout the country, thanks to its state of the art filtration system. Families can feel good about letting their children play all day in the water without worrying about its cleanliness. Just make sure to wear sunscreen!
