About Half Moon Bay
The small, sleepy beach city of Half Moon Bay sits along the coast of California, full of character, foggy mornings, and beautiful sights. Families love living here because of all that Half Moon Bay has to offer, including a small-town feel and safe neighborhoods. Half Moon Bay is also a popular tourist destination, as it embodies the kind of place every small beach town wants to be. With many interesting historic sites and beautiful beaches, Half Moon Bay has something for everyone.
Before Half Moon Bay became the small city it is today, this land was mainly farmland and agricultural developments. It wasn't until the middle of the 1800s that people began to build homes here. Half Moon Bay was actually the first developed town in the entire county, and has gone by several different names during its early days, including Spanishtown and San Benito. Because of its coastal location, Half Moon Bay has always been a successful location for the fishing industry, and it has been known for its fishing since its beginnings. It wasn't until the 1870s that Half Moon Bay got its modern name, however, and Half Moon Bay was known for its racial diversity. Because there was stagecoach service to the small, bustling city, it attracted people from all ways of life.
As is true of many cities in California, a significant amount of growth came with the establishment of the local railroad, increasing transportation to the area for people, as well as for goods and services. An interesting historical fact about Half Moon Bay has to do with the Prohibition area, when alcohol sales were against the law. Many bootleggers and illegal producers of alcohol would hide their production facilities and storage sheds in Half Moon Bay due to the thick fog. The blanket of fog provided cover and helped to keep their illegal operations hidden for a time.
Half Moon Bay has done a lot to preserve its rich history in the San Francisco Bay Area, and much of the old downtown area has been restored and protected. Some buildings date back to Half Moon Bay's early days, and for this reason, Half Moon Bay is a fairly popular tourist destination in California. Just walking the streets takes you back to a different day and time. Many of the old buildings here are on the National Registry of Historic Places, which provides a good amount of protection, preserving the historical sites for future generations to come.
When it comes to education, local students have a great selection of schools and educational programs here in Half Moon Bay. Not only are there many resources outside of the city in nearby communities thanks to Half Moon Bay's location in the Bay Area, but the schools located within the city are of high quality as well.
