An interesting historical fact about Half Moon Bay has to do with the Prohibition area, when alcohol sales were against the law. Many bootleggers and illegal producers of alcohol would hide their production facilities and storage sheds in Half Moon Bay due to the thick fog. The blanket of fog provided cover and helped to keep their illegal operations hidden for a time.

Half Moon Bay has done a lot to preserve its rich history in the San Francisco Bay Area, and much of the old downtown area has been restored and protected. Some buildings date back to Half Moon Bay's early days, and for this reason, Half Moon Bay is a fairly popular tourist destination in California. Just walking the streets takes you back to a different day and time. Many of the old buildings here are on the National Registry of Historic Places, which provides a good amount of protection, preserving the historical sites for future generations to come.
